It marks the day that the Constitution of India came into effect, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.

The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, but it only came into effect on January 26, 1950, after being signed by the members of the Assembly. This date was chosen because it was on this day in 1930 that the Declaration of Independence was made, calling for the complete independence of India from British rule.
